Understanding the NDIS
(National Disability Insurance Scheme)

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is a vital initiative by the Australian government designed to provide tailored support and services for individuals with disabilities, as well as their families and caregivers. Launched in 2013, the NDIS operates on a person-centred approach, empowering participants by creating individualized support plans based on their unique goals and needs.

Through the NDIS, eligible individuals receive funding to access a wide range of services, including healthcare, therapy, personal support, and assistive technology. This funding system replaces the previous one-size-fits-all approach, offering greater flexibility, choice, and control over the support services participants receive.

How the NDIS Works:

  • Eligibility: To access NDIS funding, individuals must meet specific eligibility criteria based on their disability and residency status.
  • Personalised Plan: Once approved, participants collaborate with the NDIS to develop a personalized plan that outlines their goals, needs, and the required support services. This plan is reviewed regularly to ensure it continues to meet the participant’s changing needs.
  • Ongoing Support: The NDIS focuses on empowering participants by offering more control over their lives and the services they use, ensuring they can live as independently as possible.

At Pathways 2 Care, we’re here to guide you through the NDIS process and help you develop a plan that suits your needs. Whether you’re new to the NDIS or need assistance with ongoing support, our team is dedicated to ensuring you get the most out of your plan.

Eligibility Criteria for NDIS

Eligibility for the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) in Australia is determined by several criteria that assess the individual’s disability and its impact on their daily life. The primary eligibility requirements include:

AGE

The NDIS is available to people under the age of 65. For those over 65, other aged care services are available.

RESIDENCY

The applicant should hold Australian citizenship, a permanent residency, or a Protected Special Category Visa.

DISABILITY

The person must have a permanent disability that significantly affects their ability to participate in daily activities and requires support.

The NDIS (National Disability Insurance Scheme) is an Australian government initiative designed to support individuals with permanent and significant disabilities. It provides funding to help with services and supports that improve quality of life, independence, and participation in the community.

To be eligible for NDIS funding, individuals must be under 65 years of age, an Australian citizen or permanent resident, and have a permanent and significant disability that impacts their daily life. Eligibility is assessed through an NDIS access request.

We provide a range of NDIS services including:

Supported employment

Community access and social participation
Plan management services

To apply for NDIS funding, you will need to make an access request through the NDIS. This involves providing medical evidence and personal details to confirm your eligibility. We can assist you with the application process if needed.

Yes, as an NDIS participant, you have the freedom to choose the service providers that best meet your needs. You can either self-manage your NDIS plan, use a plan manager, or let the NDIS manage your plan.
What is the difference between plan management and self-management?
Self-management means you manage your NDIS funds directly, including paying providers and keeping track of your budget.
Plan management means a registered plan manager will handle the financial and administrative tasks related to your NDIS plan, while you maintain control over your supports and services.

The NDIS funds supports that are considered reasonable and necessary to help you achieve your goals. These can include healthcare, community access, assistive technology, and other disability-related supports. You can discuss your goals and needs with your support coordinator to ensure your plan covers appropriate services.

  • Claims can be made via the NDIS portal or through your plan manager, depending on how your plan is managed. You will need to submit invoices for the services you have received, and these will be processed accordingly.
